Astrophysics Science Division

The Astrophysics Science Division supports the GSFC astrophysics projects by providing scientific leadership and supports a research program to achieve NASA's strategic science goals. The key questions addressed by the Divisions research programs include:

  • How do galaxies, stars, and planetary systems form and evolve?
  • What is the diversity of worlds beyond our solar system?
  • Which planets might harbor life?
  • What powered the big bang?
  • What is Dark Energy?
  • What happens to space, time and matter at the edge of a black hole?
  • What are the cycles of matter & energy in the evolving universe?

    COBE Satellite Marks 20th Anniversary
NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite rocketed into Earth orbit on Nov. 18, 1989, and quickly revolutionized our understanding of the early cosmos. Developed and built at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., COBE precisely measured and mapped the oldest light in the universe -- the cosmic microwave background.

    Division News

Nov 20 - Swift and Fermi are both featured in Volume 5, Issue 11 of the Goddard View.

Nov 18 - Several ASD scientists have been selected to serve on important NASA advisory committees/working groups: Aki Roberge (667) has been appointed to the Exoplanetary Program Analysis Group (ExoPAG). This group reports to the NASA Advisory Committee (NAC) astrophysics subcommittee (APS). Sally Heap (667) serves on this subcommittee. Dominic Benford (665) has recently been selected to serve on the JDEM Interim Science Working Group (ISWG). This working group will advise the JDEM Project on mission concept design and science requirements.

Nov 6 - Elihu Boldt Memorial Symposium - Last fall, September 12, 2008, Dr. Elihu Boldt passed away. Dr. Boldt was the first head of the X-ray Astrophysics Branch in the Laboratory of High Energy Astrophysics. Some who worked with him are honoring his memory with talks on subjects that he worked on or to which their work has evolved in a half day symposium on the morning of Nov. 6.

Nov 2 - Cosmic Reflection World Premiere - Celebrating the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope's first year in orbit.

Oct 9 - Hubble and Swift are both featured in Volume 5, Issue 9 of the Goddard View.

Sep 23 - Congratulations to John Mitchell and the BESS program for being one of nine scientific teams selected to work on future high-altitude balloon and sounding rocket payloads.

Aug 4 - An exciting new astrophysics mission will provide a revolutionary window into the universe. Named the Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS), the satellite will be the first to systematically measure the polarization of cosmic X-ray sources. (Read more)
